Deluxe Meatballs with Potatoes and Cheese

Ingredients:

  • 3 large Russet potatoes, peeled and parboiled
  • 1 white onion, finely diced
  • 1 pinch dried paprika
  • 1 pinch dried parsley
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1½ pounds ground beef
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Bechamel Sauce:

  • 5 tablespoons butter
  • 4 cups milk
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions:

Prepare the Bechamel Sauce:

  1. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Stir in the flour and cook for about 6 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Heat the milk in a separate pan until it is almost boiling.
  4. Gradually add the hot milk to the flour mixture, whisking continuously until smooth after each addition.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
  6. Season with salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Set aside.

Preheat the Oven:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare the Meatballs and Casserole:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, dried parsley, a pinch of nutmeg, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into meatballs of even size.
  3. Slice the parboiled potatoes thinly.

Assemble the Casserole:

  1. Line the bottom and sides of a round casserole dish with overlapping potato slices.
  2. Arrange the meatballs on top of the potato layer.
  3. Place additional potato slices between the meatballs.
  4. Pour the prepared bechamel sauce evenly over the meatballs and potatoes.
  5. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.

Bake:

Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Serve:

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
